what are the lessons?

It's so easy for us to be like, oh, you will learn about yogaaaa on the teacher training Jenny,

You know yoga? Yeah, that!

But I know what many of us are thinking... what exactly DO we learn in yoga teacher training?

Here is a quick rundown of some of the modules we will explore in the training (with a sneak peek of some pages from the actual manual in case you are extra curious!)

Yoga Philosophy

The essential principles of Yoga as a practice and a way of life can be found in three main ancient texts: the Bhagavad Gita, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. We will explore, discuss, and reflect on each of these with a teacher who is exceptionally passionate about the subject and what it has to teach us.

Alignment

How do we even DO each of these yoga poses?  Our teacher is exceptionally passionate about the human body, is always keeping up to date with current research and how to use it to keep ourselves and our students safe and strong.

Adjustments & Assists

Alignment of the physical body and how to assist the students in the yoga poses by using either our voice or by actually physically adjusting them (always with permission of course!). Taught in studio with real bodies by a teacher with over 20 years of experience in the subject.

Anatomy

This is a 101 down low of the bones and muscles of the human body and how they will function.

Subtle Anatomy

This is the study of the body as energy rather than just its bones and muscles, such as the Chakras and the Koshas.

Subtle Anatomy is often where the magic happens in yoga for many, and what makes yoga so unique from other forms of exercise.

Meditation & Holding Space

Yoga was created to settle the “fluctuations of the mind” through meditation. Human beings naturally have busy minds. We will explore how to help ourselves and others find clarity and calm.

We have two teachers from two different lineages who will share this subject. This is so we can help you figure out which forms of meditation work best for you and your students (as we are all so very different!)

Pranayama

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word for breathing exercises. In these exercises, we learn different ways to manipulate the breath for ourselves and others, achieving many different health benefits.

Our Pranayama teacher has a PHD in Pranayama and has been teaching the art of breathing for decades. We are honoured to have him join us for this module.

Vinyasa Krama

Vinyasa Krama is the step-by-step progression into a specific “goal.” In other words, it is all about sequencing your yoga postures in the class plan to keep your students safe, engaged, and progressing after each class with you.

We look at how Vinyasa Krama can be used in everyday life and not only to create yoga classes.

Class Planning

Putting your class together is a craft in itself. How do we determine what class plan writing language works best for us? Where and when do we include the theme of your class, the meditation, breath awareness, and then the yoga poses themselves? How do we write class plans sustainably and effectively so we can continue to become better yoga teachers? These questions and more will be answered and put into practical action here.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the 'sister science' to yoga and India's traditional natural wellness system. It is one of the world's oldest holistic “whole-body” healing systems. We will discuss how we can incorporate it into our daily lives.

Our Ayurveda teacher is a well-known author on the subject and has been teaching Ayurveda for over 20 years. We can not wait to share her wisdom with you.

Indigenous Culture & Spirituality

Although we are studying an ancient Indian modality, we will also explore our own roots here in Australia. Our ancestors have had the tools for their own ways of embodying mindfulness and spirituality for thousands of years.

Local Dharug elder Uncle Colin will sit in a circle with us for a yarn on this one.

Communication

Language has begun to lose its meaning in a world full of emojis and rushed text messages. How can we use language to give clear and concise instructions, not just when teaching but also when communicating with everyone around us in regular life?

Introduction to Pre-Natal Yoga

Pregnant women are often referred to start yoga by their doctors, but how do we actually keep them safe in an open-level class? It is an exceptionally important subject, and one with optional further learning opportunities if you wish to explore it in more depth.

Our Prenatal Yoga Teacher is also an author on this subject—she has five children of her own! You know she will have so much to share about this module.

Introduction to Yin Yoga

A new and now very popular style of yoga based on traditional Chinese medicine. In Yin Yoga, we hold poses for 3 - 8 minutes, often using props, staying grounded to the floor.

Introduction to Trauma-Informed Yoga

Each of us holds some form of trauma to some degree. How can we be mindful of this when holding space for others in a yoga class?

The Business of Yoga

How do we survive in the wilderness once we graduate, being our own boss and becoming contractors for multiple gyms/schools/studios? How do we travel from place to place and keep it sustainable? How do we write class plans sustainably? How do we prepare an invoice and pay taxes? What the heck is an ABN? What is our average pay per hour? Do we have the right to superannuation by our employers or do we have to put it aside ourselves?

This subject is often overlooked in other yoga teacher trainings, but we will dive right into it, ensuring you feel supported in every way.

Here are some sneaky snippets of our manual below :

We hope the above provides you with some insight into what to expect over the next 6 months.

We understand that it might feel like a lot of information to take in, but please know that we have designed the course to ensure that someone as busy as you still has the opportunity to absorb the teachings and apply them to everyday life.
