it’s never the destination

Last week, while I was facilitating a session for our current group of yoga teacher trainees, I was asked to share my story about how I transitioned from being a yoga student to a yoga teacher.

The question threw me for a moment.

I am aware that I teach yoga, but honestly, I feel like a student who teaches classes. For me, teaching has always been an extension of my yoga practice.

We all come to yoga for different reasons. I found yoga, in a roundabout way, when I was only 16, through my interest in meditation. My first memories of 'doing' yoga were through a morning TV show called ‘Yoga TV’ that my mum would record for me, and I would do it after school (because I was never a morning person).

Over the years, I have joined yoga studios, practised at home, didn’t practise, thought I should be practising, contemplated doing yoga teacher training, joined more yoga studios… You get the picture. The reason why I would return to my practice again and again was unique to every stage of my life.

Ultimately, what led me to pursue my yoga teacher training was a desire to learn more about yoga, not necessarily to teach. I wanted the practice to be part of my life. I had always wanted to do it, and the timing in my life lined up with the training start date.

What I learnt in my training, the connections I made, and the choices they led me to make profoundly shifted my life.

I could never have predicted that the decision to join that training would lead me to being asked the question "How did you transition from being a student to being a teacher?” while facilitating on a teacher training.

We all come to the practice of yoga from different walks of life, and the same is true for yoga teacher training. I thought I would maybe teach a class here and there, but now it is my career. Many students decide not to teach. Others have built businesses.

It is the journey, not the destination, that shapes us.

At the end of the day, we are all students, and the way we show up for ourselves and for others is part of the practice we call yoga.
